Established in 1897 to serve miners, the hotel has gone through three iterations since then and now provides guests with a comfortable and unique accommodation option in the heart of the Karangahake Gorge.

History of the Waikino Hotel The original building of the Waikino Hotel was described as a "very fine structure" in the Ohinemuri Gazette when it was first established in 1897. However, the hotel had to be rebuilt twice after the gold rush became far less profitable. After the second iteration of the hotel was sold to an unnamed buyer, the third and current version of the hotel was established. It was originally known as the Mackaytown Hotel and was moved to Waikino in April 1926 soon after prohibition was abolished.
