Description

Mount Egmont, also known as Mount Taranaki, is an active but quiescent stratovolcano located in the Taranaki region on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island.

The mountain is a prominent feature of Egmont National Park, which is a dream destination for enthusiastic hikers with more than 300 kilometers of scenic walking tracks. The park has 13 entrances, making it one of New Zealand's most accessible wilderness areas. The geological history of Taranaki Maunga is also fascinating, as it is New Zealand's most perfectly formed volcano and around 120,000 years old.

The viewing platform at Mount Egmont offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. To reach the viewing platform, visitors can take the Mount Taranaki Summit Track, which is open from December to April. The track is only recommended for fit and well-equipped trampers, as it is a challenging climb that takes approximately 8-10 hours to complete. From the summit, visitors can enjoy spectacular scenery and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The view from the top is truly awe-inspiring and worth the effort.

For those who prefer a less strenuous activity, there are many other walking tracks and hikes suitable for any level of fitness. The park offers lush waterfalls, rainforests, and mossy swamps, making it a great place to explore the natural beauty of New Zealand. The 'Around the Mountain Circuit' takes between 3 to 5 days to complete and is a great way to experience the park's diverse landscape.

The Egmont National Park Visitor Centre is located at 2879 Egmont Road and can provide information on the park's facilities, activities, and accommodations. The park has a small club field located near the end of Pembroke Road. There are also several entry points to the park, including Manaia Road, Egmont Road, and Pembroke Road. In summary, the Mount Egmont viewing platform offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike.
