Description

The Centre of New Zealand Monument is a popular attraction located on Botanical Hill in Nelson Tasman, New Zealand.

Although it is not the actual geographical center of the country, it was used as a central survey point in the 1800s by Chief Surveyor of Nelson, John Spence Browning. The true center of New Zealand is located a few kilometers south of Kohatu in Golden Downs Forest. The walk to the monument takes 20-60 minutes, depending on fitness level, and is suitable for push chairs and buggies.

Visitors can start the walk at the Botanical Reserve, where the first-ever rugby game was played in New Zealand. From there, there are several options to reach the top of Botanical Hill, where visitors can enjoy spectacular views over Nelson Tasman. The reserve has a unique history and is adorned with a giant white pin that identifies its significance. The summit offers views over central Nelson and Tasman Bay.

The Centre of New Zealand Monument is located atop Botanical Hill, which is 147 meters high, on the eastern edge of Nelson city center. A network of tracks thread through the reserve encompassing the hill, with connections to Sir Stanley Whitehead Park and Branford Park in the Maitai Valley. The walk is an easy physical difficulty level, and visitors should allow at least 30 minutes to complete the 2 km return walk. To access the Botanical Reserve, visitors can use the blue footbridge at the end of Hardy Street, Tory Street, or Milton Street. Parking is available by the footbridge.

The Centre of New Zealand Monument is a great place to visit for those who love hiking and nature. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the history of New Zealand's surveying work and enjoy the beautiful views of Nelson Tasman.
