Tourist attractions

Metung, VIC 3904

Description

Legend Rock Metung is an important part of Gunaikurnai mythology, located in shallow Bancroft Bay waters opposite the Metung Yacht Club in Tatungooloong Country.

According to a myth, a group of fishermen violated social law by consuming more fish than they should have without feeding their dogs. As punishment for their greed, they were turned into stone, and the rocks in the Metung formation, known as Legend Rocks, hold great spiritual value to the Gunaikurnai people.

The Legend Rock represents one of many Gunaikurnai stories that teach moral lessons to the community. This particular story serves as a reminder that greed brings punishment and reinforces the laws of the land.

Legend Rock Metung is accessible by turning off the Princes Highway at Swan Reach and following the Tambo River. It is the only remaining rock from the original formation and is protected by the Heritage Act of Victoria. The preservation of the last Legend Rock was made possible through the efforts of community members and the Gippsland & East Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative.

Visiting the Legend Rock Metung site provides a unique opportunity to experience the culture of the Gunaikurnai people. By learning about their mythology and history rooted in their culture, visitors can gain insight into their way of life.

The Legend Rock Metung site is open year-round, and it is advisable to confirm visitation hours in advance. Special events hosted by the Gunaikurnai Land & Waters Aboriginal Corporation offer opportunities to witness cultural performances, participate in workshops, and explore exhibitions.
