Description

Lake Maroon, also known as Maroon Dam, is an earth-fill and rock embankment dam located in the South East region of Queensland, Australia.

The dam is primarily used for irrigation purposes by the Scenic Rim Regional Council region. The dam features an un-gated spillway across the Burnett Creek, and it is one of the most picturesque man-made lakes in Queensland.

Lake Maroon is situated 64 km southwest of Beaudesert, with Burnett Creek acting as its main inflow. The dam construction started in 1969 and was completed in 1973, making it 46.3 meters high and 451 meters long. The dam can hold up to 44,300 megaliters of water (9.7×109 imp gal; 1.17×1010 US gal) when at full capacity. Its catchment area falls within the Scenic Rim and creates a 310-hectare (770-acre) reservoir. The uncontrolled un-gated spillway can handle up to 567 cubic meters per second (20,000 cu ft/s) and is located 43.9 meters (144 ft) above the original stream bed.

The reservoir was officially opened on 16 July 1975 by Neville Hewitt, the Queensland Minister for Water Resources. In July 2008, the dam was transferred to Seqwater's management. During drought, the water level of the dam did fall drastically to 12% of its capacity.

Lake Maroon is an ideal location for outdoor activities such as fishing and water skiing. The dam features a single concrete boat ramp, and there are no restrictions on the number of boats. The lake is well-stocked with fish species such as
