Description
Lady Musgrave Island is a stunning coral cay located on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
It is named after Lady Lucinda Musgrave and is the second southernmost island in the Great Barrier Reef chain. The island can be reached by excursion boats from Bundaberg or the Town of 1770.
The island has a rich history, with stories of a deep water channel being cut into the lagoon by fishermen or widened by guano miners.
Lady Musgrave Island offers beautiful views of its vegetation, including Pisonia grandis, Tournefortia argentea, Casuarina equisetifolia, and Pandanus tectorius. There is also a small pond of brackish water towards the southern end of the cay. The island is located on the southern end of a large lagoon, allowing for easy access to the stunning reef.
The island is known as Wallaginji by local Australian Aboriginal tribes, meaning 'beautiful reef.' It is also an important bird area, with various species of seabirds and shorebirds present.
Lady Musgrave Island has a rich maritime history, with several known shipwrecks on the reef. These include the Jane Lockhart, the Bannockburn, and the Kokotu Motor Vessel.
