Description

Company Dam Grenfell, also known as "Comps Dam" to the locals, is a popular recreational area located in Grenfell, New South Wales.

It has a fascinating history dating back to the mining era, making it a unique tourist attraction. In this listing, we will explore the dam's history, what visitors can see and do there, the best time to visit, and how to get there.

Company Dam Grenfell was built in June 1867 to supply water to gold claims and crushers in the area. The Grenfell Water Company was responsible for the construction of the dam, and its estimated capacity was 10 million gallons of water storage, making it one of the largest dams for mining in the colony. After the mining era ended, the dam fell into disrepair until the arrival of the railway in Grenfell in 1901. Since then, it has been used to supply water to steam engines.

Today, Company Dam Grenfell is utilised year-round as a recreational area popular for walking, running, cycling, and canoeing. The area is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a unique spot for bird-watching and plant enthusiasts. Birding NSW's Important Bird and Biodiversity Area Survey has been conducted at the site since 2004, with over 50 different bird species recorded. It has been designated as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA).

In addition to bird-watching, visitors can enjoy a variety of walking routes available around the dam. These trails range from easy to moderate difficulty, offering scenic views of the area. Visitors can also bring their bicycles to explore the area, with a dedicated cycling path available. For water enthusiasts, canoes and kayaks can be rented at nearby shops
