Description

Lake Awoonga is a picturesque lake located on the Boyne River in Central Queensland, Australia.

It serves as the primary water source for the Gladstone region and offers a variety of recreational activities for both tourists and locals. The current design of Lake Awoonga's dam has allowed for increases in its height, raising the structure to its current level of 40m AHD. The dam's capacity is 777,000 megalitres and it is a rock-fill structure with a concrete upstream face slab. Lake Awoonga is home to an impressive variety of small animals, including fish, eels, turtles, platypus, and numerous bird species. It is also known for its breeding program for barramundi and other fish species. The Lake Awoonga area is home to more than 415 plant varieties, providing a rich ecosystem for the region's wildlife. The lake offers a range of recreational opportunities, including swimming, fishing, sailing, and camping. Visitors can also explore Glengarry Homestead, a heritage-listed site located within the inundation zone of the dam newline.
