Description

Deepwater National Park is a pristine coastal ecosystem located in the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia.

It covers an area of 4,090 hectares and protects a range of coastal heaths and sand dunes within the Deepwater Creek catchment. The park is known for its unspoiled freshwater catchments.

The park is home to a diverse range of plant and animal species. The vegetation varies from beach plants in the east to wind-sheared plants in the exposed higher areas. In the more sheltered western areas, the vegetation grows up to three canopy levels of forest and woodlands. Various bird species, such as rose-crowned fruit doves, fairy gerygones, and grey fantails, can be found in the western region. The park's beaches serve as nesting sites for sea turtles, including loggerheads, flatbacks, greens, and leatherbacks. Leatherbacks specifically make Deepwater National Park the only mainland location for their nesting. Other bird species like pied oystercatchers, bar-tailed godwits, tattlers, and crested terns can also be spotted along the beaches. The park is also home to emus, brahminy kites, and Queensland's largest cockroach Macro-panesthia sp.

Deepwater National Park provides facilities to cater to visitors' needs. Camping facilities, pit toilets, and picnic tables are available at Wreck Rock, located 5.5 km north of the park's southern boundary. Another campsite called Middle Rock is available, although it does not offer any facilities. Day-trippers can access picnic facilities at Flat Rock. It is important to note that domestic animals and open fires are not allowed within the park.
