Western Australian photographer James Simmons has been announced as the 2011 AIPP WA Epson Professional Photographer of the Year, the Epson AIPP WA Illustrative photographer of the year, and awarded the Print Handler’s award for the second year running.
James Simmons, one of Western Australia’s emerging photographers, edged out some of WA’s best-known wedding, portrait and landscape photographers for the coveted prize of the WA’s Professional Photographer of the Year. The titles is recognition not just of James’ professional skills as a photographer, but his ability to capture exceptional images that are fresh and new in a world saturated with images. This award is part of James’ success in 2011 having walked away from the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) national competition at Sydney’s Darling Harbour, with the title of Illustrative Photographer of the Year, Highest Scoring Print and Athol Shmith award in June.
Winning the WA Professional Photographer of the year is terrific recognition of James’ talent and ability to capture outstanding quality images.
“I was influenced by the harrowing history of the country and the stories of hardship and devastation. The images display a reflective story of tragedy in the solemn scenes. The images were shot in Göttingen Germany during very average weather but they have a beautifully haunting feel. The mix of the bleak, cold weather and a stark landscape exemplified the feeling and story I wanted to tell and was almost identical to the images I had in my head.”
James exerts his skill, talent, and enthusiasm as head of photography at Viva Photography. His role includes hiring, training and ongoing support of the team of over 20 photographers employed by the portrait and wedding photography studios in Western Australia and Victoria. In addition to his role, James continues to photograph weddings in both states and continues to wield a camera in the studio for portraits.
James is available for interviews or media engagements. For more information about James’ award or his photography, contact James via email firstname.lastname@example.org or at the Viva Photography office on 08 9431 7777
