With its sophisticated, New York-style ambience, the Ellington Jazz Club heralds the beginning of a new era in Perth nightlife.
New York City holds a special place in the heart of jazz culture. After the birth of the genre in the Deep South in the early 1900s, the city allowed the music and its culture to flourish with specially devoted clubs that sprung up across the Big Apple.
Throughout the 20th Century, jazz clubs became a fixture of New York nightlife and they continue to thrive today.
Perth is now lucky enough to welcome a taste of this world into its own nightlife with the Ellington Jazz Club on Beaufort Street.
Modelled on the original New York jazz clubs, the Ellington oozes effortless cool and laidback sophistication – the essence of the jazz movement.
Setting the scene downstairs are a nine-foot Steinway grand piano; a cluster of round, wooden, cabaret-style tables; and spotlights focused on the stage.
There is seating for 80 and standing room for 50. Upstairs is a funky cocktail bar with booth seating and standing room for 125 people. Guests can choose to chat and socialise in this area, or wander downstairs to enjoy the live music.
The space can also be divided into three separate areas for different-sized functions.
The Miles Davis Room holds approximately 15 people, the John Coltrane Room holds about 30 people and the Dizzy Gillespie Room holds up to 80 people.
The Ellington serves as a venue that treats deserving artists with respect, while allowing patrons to see the world’s finest jazz musicians in a comfortable, intimate setting.
As a result, the Ellington’s program consists of 35 to 45 live music shows a month, featuring local, interstate and international jazz musicians.
With cabaret-style table service, the Ellington serves food from its tapas menu until 2am on weekends and midnight on weeknights. Bookings well in advance are strongly recommended and the Ellington staff can work with you to help devise a function plan to best suit your needs.

The Numbers: The main performance area downstairs has seating for 80 and standing room for 50. The upstairs area has booth seating and standing room for 125 people. The Beverages: The Ellington’s wine list has been carefully put together to include a selection of fine sparkling, white and red wines, as well as a dessert wine option.
The Company: When owners Graham Wood and Bernard Kong opened the Ellington Jazz Club in March 2009, their aim was to create a venue that would treat deserving artists with respect, while allowing patrons to see the world’s best jazz musicians in action. With an ambience reminiscent of a New York jazz club, the Ellington features between 35 and 45 live jazz acts each month. Guests are treated to cabaret-style table service as they enjoy the performances.
