Smithbrook is a boutique winery situated on one of the states most picturesque sites in Pemberton, Western Australia surrounded by spectacular towering Karri trees. The property is a 3 hour drive south of Perth and 90 minutes south of Margaret River. One of an exciting group of emerging wine regions in the South West, Pemberton is gaining prominence through its evolution as an exceptional, maritime climate grape growing area.
Underlying the southern corner of Western Australia is a huge mass of granite rock called the Yilgarn craton. The Yilgarn craton is recognised as the oldest rock formation on earth dating back more than 3 billion years. The gravelly ironstone soils that have formed on the higher ground above the craton are found throughout Pemberton and the Smithbrook vineyard.
With a 'tall tree' nature reserve next door, Smithbrook focuses closely on the environment and incorporates minimal spray and free roaming Guinea fowl to control insects and pests. Smithbrook wines capture the essence of what this beautiful region has to offer without interfering with the spectacular and picturesque natural environment that surrounds the vineyard.
In 2010 Smithbrook was acquired by Terroir Investments Pty Ltd part of the Fogarty Wine Group which also owns the iconic Lake's Folly in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales; Millbrook Winery in the Perth Hills, Western Australia; and Deep Woods Estate in Margaret River, Western Australia.
The team at Smithbrook is dedicated to producing unique, regionally honed wines of exceptional quality with a focus, on varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot. Wines are produced under three labels, the ultra premium Yilgarn label which are limited release or single block vines, the premium estate range and the value for money fruit driven Naked Grape range.
Originally planted in the 1980s and one of the first in the Pemberton region, the Smithbrook vineyard covers over 57 hectares of the 110 hectare property. With over 40 blocks the vineyards take advantage of a wide range of soils ranging from karri loam, heavy gravel, gravel loam and sandy loam.
Smithbrook wines are 100% estate grown allowing for precise picking times and small batch winemaking to maximise the potential of the varieties grown such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot.
Organic practices are ingrained in the property and include the use of sheep to control grass cover and Guinea fowl and lady birds for insect control, along with organically approved Bordeaux sprays for effective disease control. A fresh water catchment on the property produces the minimal water inputs and trains vines to be tolerant of seasonal variances.
The picturesque property is also home to truffles, fresh water marron and grazing land.
A continued philosophy of the best varieties on the best sites produces wines of strong distinction and character. An intimate knowledge of these specific sites and appropriate yields enables consistent production of premium wine.
