Working within a fixed budget, tight timing and harsh site conditions provided challenges for this rehabilitation project completed for BHP Billiton at its iron ore bulk handling facilities at Nelson Point and Finucane Island.
Before TDL’s involvement, sporadic attempts to revegetate disused land on the 100ha site had met with limited success.
TDL’s landscape professionals and North West workforce had the local knowledge and on-the-ground resources to develop a fast-track strategy and implementation plan.
The solution included soil analysis and amelioration, liaison with earthworks contractors to manipulate the micro-climate and cost-effective remote site irrigation systems. The first stage used a temporary pioneer crop, permanent native seeding and tree stock in key locations and shelterbelts. The result was a successful “greening” of stage one within six months.
