In Detail

With more than 25 years of Winemaking experience, 17 in Western Australia, Michael came to the conclusion that it was the Great Southern region, with its diverse climates and ‘terroirs’, that had the most potential of any area in Western Australia for growing outstanding Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon that would make complex wines with similar attributes to the great wines of France. The wines that inspired him to become a winemaker 30 years ago. These two noble varieties have different climatic requirements to achieve optimal flavour and quality.

So, in 2009, Michael set out to find the vineyards that would have the quality parameters he was looking for. In 2010, after some luck and perseverance the fruit was found and the first Great Southern Reserve Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon were made. They display classically expressive varietal characters and the elegance and finesse for which Michael’s winemaking is renowned.

The Chardonnay comes from very low yielding Mendoza clone Chardonnay grown on a mature vineyard in the Albany sub-region. The cool climate moderated by the closeness of the southern ocean giving warmer nights and cooler days because of the constant sea breeze. Perfect for the early ripening Chardonnay.

An exceptional site in the Mount Barker sub-region was chosen for its suitability for Cabernet Sauvignon. 40 kilometers inland means colder nights and slower ripening, necessary for maximal tannin development and flavour buildup. Old vines and low yields give concentrated flavour and firm but supple tannins.

Once in the winery the grapes are gently transformed into wine using traditional techniques with minimal intervention and maturation in the finest French oak barrels.

The wines are delicious in their youth because of their wonderfully vibrant fruit and balance, but they will age gracefully and gain greater complexity with many years in the cellar.
