Hamelin Bay Wines must have one of the most photographed views in all of Margaret River because it is a simply stunning rural setting. The cellar door is situated high on a hill overlooking the vineyard below with the lake on the valley floor set against forested hills of Karri and lush pasture.
The cellar building is a contemporary structure of local granite, steel and north facing glass to maximise the view and there is a deck for outside dining. The scene changes from season to season, as the pastures brown the vineyard flourishes and as the vineyard turns in autumn the pastures are renewed.
The family owned winery is run by Richard and Roslyn Drake-Brockman whose family association with the Margaret River region dates back to the first settlement in 1830. Richard believes in the importance of the site or “terroir”, and seeks to encapsulate the natural beauty of the vineyard within the wines.
There are three wine ranges to sample. The Rampant White and Red blends have wide appeal for early drinking . Higher up the order is the Five Ashes Vineyard range consisting of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rose, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz. At the summit there are three, limited release, ultra premium wines, namely the Five Ashes Reserve Chardonnay, Five Ashes Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Five Ashes Reserve Shiraz.
The cellar door is open seven days a week from 10am – 5 pm. Tastings are offered between the hours of 10am and 4.45pm and lunch is served between 12pm and 3pm. Hamelin Bay Cafe specialises in platters made with locally grown and made products, quiches and muffins in large and small servings.
