The history of the eleven and a half-hectare wine property reads like a wartime account of defence and countermeasure against waves of enemy forces.
The Green Valley Winery had an explosive start in life, literally. The land was originally a gelignite block, used to store explosive for early settlers to clear jarrah and karri forests for farmland. Presumably they were all cleared prior to establishment of the winery. After establishment of the vines, birds attacked and destroyed three successive yearsÆ worth of crops, then up to a third of the harvests after that.````After installation of bird netting, the kangaroos took their turn, destroying the netting and taking a fancy to the Shiraz grapes, prompting the need for additional and stronger netting.Today the philosophy is to have fewer vines that produce more intense flavours, one thatÆs served the quality of the produce well.
