They are crafted with attention to detail - from the vineyard through to the winery. We think we have great wines.
Three generations of the one family have toiled together to create the vineyards of Oakway Estate. The property originally supported apple and stone fruit orchards before its potential for producing premium wine was realised by the present owners, Wayne and Ria Hammond, in 1997. Today the property supports the vineyard, a plantation of sustainable blue gum trees, and beef cattle.
The vines were planted in 1998 on mostly light gravel over loam soils, and the first commercial vintage occurred in 2002. Since 2003 they have consistently won awards for their wines. Their approach to vineyard management means they are constantly observing vine vigour and growth. They take pride in using minimal chemicals, choosing to monitor insect populations and use more natural alternatives to problems like the team of Guinea Fowl. They undertake canopy management which includes fruit thinning, leaf plucking and water management to ensure intense berry flavours are achieved - good wines start in the vineyard.
Most of the grapes are grown on the cool summer slopes of the Capel River in the district of Paynedale, near Donnybrook, and other grapes are sourced from the Geographe and Swan Valley regions of Western Australia. Oakway classifies itself as a boutique winery producing just over 1500 cases per year, but with a less complex outlook on the wine industry.
Grape varieties include Cabernet, Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Wines produced include straight varietals and blends Cabernet Merlot, Cabernet Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. They also produce a no alcohol rose style wine which has been widely acclaimed.
At the Geographe Wine Show 2008, Oakway Estate won the Best White Blend and Best White Wine of the Show for their Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. Receiving numerous Gold, Silver and Bronze medals resulted in being awarded Most Successful Small Producer.
Subsequent reviews by Scoop Magazine, Spice Magazine’s Jason Boudville, James Halliday, Ray Jordan and Peter Forrestal has cemented Oakway Estate’s reputation as a producer of quality premium wines. Their web site lists many positive reviews with a long list of nationally recognised awards, now totaling three trophies and 34 gold, silver and bronze medals.
Jason Boudville said - "I would short list this SBS in the top twelve this State has to offer. Beaming from the glass is lofty gooseberry and guava tones, the strong almost forceful fruit weight romances the spotlessly clean palate. Certainly textual in character - think lime sorbet - with impressive length and finesse. The finish is similar to that of white chocolate yumminess. It's cooling without being overpowering."
Peter Forrestal rated the 2008 Unwooded Chardonnay as “Bloody Good”, saying
“Oakway is a newish label based around the Hammond family's vineyard near Donnybrook in the Geographe region. This has attractive pure fruit, decent concentration of flavour and a long, lingering finish.”
In Ray Jordan 2010 WA Wine Guide he says – “Some remarkable recent show success has stamped Oakway as a producer to watch. Situated on the Capel River half way between Donnybrook and Capel, Oakway Estate was originally an apple and stone fruit orchard. In 1998 the owners planted their first vines. The wines are showing considerable consistency and are excellent value for money.”
James Halliday has given Oakway Estate a 4 star rating, awarding the 2008 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 92/100, the Unwooded Chardonnay 90/100 and the 2007 Cabernet Merlot 88/100 and that means “Oakway Estate is a very good producer of wines with class and character.”
