The wine industry like most others is a rush for syndicated crops, expansion and bottom line profits. Cullen Wines is one of the oldest in the region is run under a different philosophy.
In the early 1960's detailed climatic studies of various regions in Southwestern Australia revealed that during the winegrowing season, Margaret River's climate was similar to that of Bordeaux, particularly Pomerol. The conclusion that Margaret River was ideal for viticulture was first tested in Wilyabrup in 1966, when Diana and Kevin Cullen planted a trial acre of vines. The encouraging results led to the couple planting 18 acres of vines on their sheep and cattle farm in 1971.
Cullen Wines while remaining family owned has since evolved making quality wine from biodynamically grown grapes sourced exclusively from The Cullen Estate Vineyard and Mangan Vineyard.
In his book 'Wisdom of the West' Bertrand Russell states that "Philosophy is as the Greeks put it a kind of adventure undertaken for its own sake."
The vineyard site at Cullens was carefully chosen for its potential to produce great wine, and in particular red wine.
The philosophy of Cullen Wines is to search for the best quality expression of the vineyard in the wine. The maritime climate, rocky soils, dry farming, and biodynamic practices all help to create individual and diverse winestyles which are unique to Cullen.
The Cullen restaurant overlooks the historic vineyard located in Cowaramup. The building’s unique construction from granite and timber, blends harmoniously with the surroundings and provides a relaxing place to enjoy a glass of wine, lunch or a coffee.
Our vineyard is Certified "A" Grade Biodynamic with the Biological Farmers Association and in keeping with the organic/biodynamic philosophy in the vineyard, all food in the restaurant is prepared using fresh, biodynamic and organic produce and is sourced from our own garden and select local producers.
In April 2009 the Cullen Wines Restaurant was reviewed in The Weekend Australian Magazine as being a top winery restaurant that defines Australian dining today.
Cullen Wines extend to you an invitation to stay in their Homestead, and to spend time tasting their excellent wines, and enjoying the very delicious food made from organic and biodynamic produce produced by Executive Chef, Matt Egan.
The peaceful country surroundings set the scene for a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. This is supported by the Cullen Wines philosophy of living in harmony with nature. Our invitation is extended to individuals, couples and families, and also for the first time to corporate groups whom we believe would find our facilities ideal for a retreat.
The Cullen Wines Homestead was built in 1976 by Diana and Kevin Cullen, the founders of the winery. It is very conveniently located within a short walking distance of the tasting room and restaurant that form such an integral part of the Cullen Wines enterprise.
The Homestead, which is constructed from local granite rock and timber, has sweeping panoramic views over the striking Margaret River countryside and local vineyards.
In all it contains six bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large living area with a large stone fireplace. Visitors have the opportunity of using the adjacent tennis court or enjoying a walk through the local bush or wandering over to the Cullen Winery for a tasting or lunch. The Homestead also has the advantage of being located in the heart of the wine growing subregion of Wilyabrup, only 15 minutes by road from the beach at Gracetown, Cowaramup Bay, the township of Cowaramup and is only 20 minutes from Margaret River and only 30 minutes from Dunsborough.
From the above description, it will be evident that the Homestead is ideal both for families wanting a relaxing few days and corporate groups that are searching for an environment that would produce a rewarding retreat.
