The vineyard is situated on an area which was previously an apple orchard, and is a diversification for the third generation of the Montgomery family which owns the property. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were planted in 1996, followed by Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Merlot in 1997. The 1998 wines were contract-made by Brenden Smith at West Cape Howe Wines, but as from 1999 Montgomery's Hill will be made at the new Porongurup Winery.
