This residence was a loved and lived-in Nedlands bungalow owned by a professional couple with two children. While comfortable, the 80-year-old character home was in need of an upgrade.
The brief from the client was to create a homely yet sophisticated galley kitchen with a new scullery, meals area and television cabinet opening up to the kitchen. Jason Levin of Dean Kitchens was also tasked with redesigning two existing bathrooms, replacing the laundry, fitting out the new study, and designing the new ensuite at the rear of the home.
Throughout the remodel, the Dean Kitchens team overcame a number of challenges, the first being the removal of the dysfunctional U-shape kitchen and its woodstove fireplace. A dividing wall between the meals area and kitchen was then taken down to make way for the open-plan layout. This required a structural post be included at the front of the kitchen and embedded in the sidewards T-piece sculpture.
When selecting materials that best matched the brief, Jason went to great lengths to ensure the finishes gave the home a contemporary, warm appearance, suitable for living and not just for show.
He settled on gloss white Smartstone ‘Astral’ benches to complement the wenge linea wood-grain accents in the adjacent dining area, and chocolate tones of the Caesarstone Emperador T-shaped feature column. Small appliances are cleverly housed in the 1200mm pantry cabinet on the rear wall, which features a bi-fold door fitting and a Caesarstone bench at the same height as the other benches.
Wide drawers were chosen to create a visually appealing horizontal appearance, while providing the client with an abundance of storage.
The well-appointed kitchen also boasts a feature island canopy rangehood, acting as the focal point of the design, a 1000mm wide refrigerator, Siemens oven, combi-oven, a semi-integrated dishwasher, and an induction cooktop.
