Debut Double

WA designers across that state are putting on their creative caps in anticipation of their debut runway shows. Scoop talks to two designers who are taking part in Telstra Perth Fashion Festival for the first time.

Natasha Butler of BRUUG

This is your debut at TPFF – did you ever think you would get to this stage with the label so quickly?
I know, it’s crazy! I’ve been such a huge fan of TPFF since I can remember, so having the opportunity to show as a part of the festival – and, more excitingly, alongside other great WA labels that I admire and respect – is such a big deal. We’ve been around for less then a year, so the overwhelming support we have received already is pretty amazing.

Tell us about the collection that will be hitting the WA Designer Runway.
We’ll be showing our Summer 15 collection, which is inspired by the stylish, confident and overtly feminine figures in our lives. Structured ruffles, fluted hems and decolletage-exposing necklines will feature in the collection, all with BRUUG’s signature relaxed, fun style.

What can we expect on the runway?
I don’t want to give too much away, but definitely a lot of fun! The BRUUG girl is confident, outgoing and stylish so the show will be full of energy and the models will rock the looks on the runway.

What do you hope to achieve out of the show?
Naturally we’d love to see more interest from stockists and media, but personally I’d really love to see a whole army of BRUUG girls attending the show. Our typical customer loves any excuse to get dressed up and head out with their friends, so I imagine I’ll be seeing a group of stylish BRUUG girls at the event. Not only will this make my year, it will also be great for my stockists’ sales in the lead up to the show.

Do you think you’ll ever dabble in menswear?
Now that’s a secret I wasn’t going to share yet. Watch this space #bruugman.
If you could dress anyone in the world with BRUUG who would it be?
The Olsen twins. Hands down. I idolise these beautiful, confident and stylish entrepreneurs. They are everything the BRUUG girl stands for; they are so switched on, love to mix and match with their style and are daring when doing so. Also, there are two of them, so I’m kinda cheating – it’s too hard to choose just one person.

Lauren Atkinson of Asuar

What do you hope to achieve out of showing at TPFF?
I am really grateful for the opportunity to show at TPFF. I would like people to see the rawness which influences the label and – if they have travelled to Vietnam – to be able to relate the textiles designs and shapes to their street and village culture.

What can we expect from Asuar on the WA Designer Runway showcase?
Colourful prints with minimalistic cuts, and plain, coloured silks with a mix of geometric and organic shapes. I will be showing my second collection at TPFF, which is Spring Summer 14/15. The aesthetics evolved from my travels in Vietnam so I have attempted to capture the images with my digital prints, along with colours and shapes which I found eminent in their street and village culture.

What does the future hold for the label?
We are constantly sourcing interesting materials and creating pieces that are conceptual yet versatile. Asuar is all about natural beauty which can be found anywhere, so we will be pushing this concept with different stories or inspirations drawn from art, architecture, process, travel and so on.
