This architecturally superior home by Robeson Architects and BE Projects is no ordinary build.
The block was triangle-shaped and just 180sqm in size, which meant BE Projects had a huge task ahead to construct the 170sqm home in such a tight space. It is also positioned in a very busy area only a few minutes from the city, has an easement at the rear boundary, and is very close to power lines, adding further complexity to the brief.
The results are astounding, with two bedrooms and bathrooms, an office, living area, balcony, courtyard, and undercover carport for two cars, all achieved within the small block.
The clients, who were also the architects of the building, requested the home office for their business be positioned on the ground floor, and for the living spaces above to make the most of views outside. They also wanted to demonstrate to future clients firsthand that small, odd parcels of land could be affordably developed into highly functional luxury dwellings. With this in mind, BE Projects ensured cost-effective methods were in place to ensure the home was achieved on budget and on time, without compromising the quality.
High-level expansive glass opens up the entire living area to the Hyde Park treetops, effectively turning the living area into an open balcony, and cutting off any view of the homes below with the exception of their character chimneys. One-way glass is used in the projecting steel box to the Vincent Street side, which acts as a retreat for sitting and watching the street below.
The kitchen forms the centrepiece of the upstairs area, commanding attention with its Nero marquina marble kitchen tops and custom-designed matching dining table. This pairs beautifully with the use of industrial materials such as the burnished concrete flooring, steel staircase and liberal use of hoop pine.
This new residence has been designed by Allan Davies Trevor Chudleigh Architects to make the most of a steeply sloping site, while maximising the owners’ outlook over the greenery to the city via an inviting balcony deck.
Low-maintenance living was key for the clients, who wanted to amplify their time enjoying their residence rather than spending their weekends with tedious upkeep.
To combat the challenge, as well as building upon a steep site, heavily insulated framed construction was used to provide a light and floating platform for living in the sky. The wall treatment is Colorbond mini corrugated wall cladding, with CSR’s Cemintel decorative cladding to add texture, while keeping with the low-maintenance theme.
Rich natural finishes such as clear-finished jarrah weather boards have only been used where there is good weather protection and low levels of strong sunshine.
In feature areas, BE Projects introduced CSR’s Cemintel decorative cladding to add interest and an alternative surface to various portions of the building.
Internal finishes consist of Essastone benchtops, custom built-in cabinetry, cedar- lined ceilings, Tasmanian Oak architraves, blackbutt flooring and LED stainless finish downlights to the living areas.
This experimentation with these contrasting materials works towards creating
a contemporary aesthetic that at the same time exudes homely warmth.
