This original 1950s home, set on a full-size block, needed a little facelift along with an extension to create extra room for entertaining. The client wanted to retain all the original features and restore the home to its former glory, while building a new, modern and contemporary extension that was completely different to the restoration.
This posed a challenge for Mondo Exclusive Homes and designer Brian Wheatland from Homeview, both of whom worked through many possibilities before finalising an outcome. Under the direction of Raw Kershaw Snr – a carpenter familiar with traditional woodwork techniques – saving and recycling materials for the restoration was paramount, and using what was already on site required lateral thinking to incorporate old materials into a refurbished finish.
Original art deco leadlight windows were fully restored and re-installed, and all original floorboards were polished as new. The front of the home sits comfortably on the street, presenting a polished look that sits within its era. The new area to the rear of the home gives the feeling of stepping forward in time, completed with high-end products sourced from local suppliers. The fresh kitchen, lounge and dining area opens to a contemporary alfresco and pool. This lovely new rear elevation is surrounded in silicone-jointed glass so as not to obstruct the view from inside.
The finished design blends art deco restoration with an ultra-modern extension, respecting the two eras and letting them speak for themselves.
