Renowned dance artist comes to Perth
From PICA | 08 Feb 2010
The Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts is pleased to welcome Martin del Amo to Perth for three performances only of his latest solo show, It’s a Jungle Out There. This work premiered in 2009 at the Campbelltown Arts Centre, and PICA has secured a season as part of a national tour throughout February and March.
"With his unique gift for storytelling, Martin del Amo is gaining a reputation as one of the country’s leading independent dance artists," DANCE AUSTRALIA.
It’s a Jungle Out There is a poignant and darkly funny exploration of the modern city as an ever-changing organism, performed through the artist’s unique fusion of dance and spoken text. Del Amo conjures a world in which sprawling suburbs collide with glitzy tourist attractions and the formality of the city grid. Physical relentlessness caused by over stimulation alternates with personal stories and poetic moments.
Del Amo has created an exciting, intimate and multi-layered work. It has cross art form appeal for those interested in dance, contemporary performance, storytelling and new music. His stories are inspired by childhood fears, peculiar phenomenon or psychological states that take us to uncanny yet strangely familiar places.
"Martin del Amo runs his own race as a performer, offering hour-long solos of personal and universal material delivered in movement and words. His latest is characteristically imaginative, direct and tightly edited, engaging the audience with the familiar yet provoking thoughts beyond everyday experience." Jill Sykes, The Sydney Morning Herald; 29 June, 2009
It’s a Jungle Out There includes an experimental electronica composition played live by del Amo’s key collaborator, composer Gail Priest. This special collaboration is also shared with lighting designer Travis Hodgson and designer Paul Matthews.
