FASHION TRAILS – Michelle Taylor
THE YORK MILL PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION - LAUNCHING SEPTEMBER 3RD 2010

This exhibition gives the viewer an all access behind the scenes pass into the hard-core end of fashion, where millions of dollars are invested and the beautiful are born thin. Shattering images of model healthy lifestyle and airbrushed perfection, this is the real life of the poetically unbalanced gypsies that travel in mass migration between the fashion capitals on the illusive fashion trail. It is the winter lights of a dim and seductive Milan, a grey cloaked secretive Paris, a bright eyed overt NY and the melancholy comforts of London.

During my trail years, of living in hotels and travelling for many months of the year on a grueling schedule with little sleep, lack of personal space and hysterical rhythms, there were a few unexpected hiccups. No one remembers the collections from spring 2001 or that the week of 9-11 happened during the NY spring collections.

Cracking holes in the stereotypical fashion images we see, displacement flows throughout this body of work. The reportage style of the images lacks the stereotypical fashion luster and polish that is expected, and rather than hide ideas of transient space and gypsy like movement, they concentrate on the poetry and stillness within it.

Michelle Taylor. Having spent eight years working overseas in the designer fashion industry, Michelle returned to Perth at the beginning of 2006 with a vast experience of international fashion requirements from both a media and production perspective. Working in many areas of designer fashion and related industries, Michelle has knowledge and experience in trend analysis, as editor for a US fashion industry website and is an accomplished fashion photographer with her work appearing in Marie Claire, Oyster, Sport and Street. Since returning to Perth, Michelle regularly writes for The West Australian Newspaper as the Acting Social Editor, lectures fashion photography at Edith Cowan University and photographically continues to be published in WA and beyond as well as working on her visual arts practice.

The York Mill Gallery is the largest regional gallery in Western Australia and the site is prominently placed at the entrance to the historic township of York, a short 97 km drive from Perth. York is arguably the premier community tourism hub of the Eastern corridor and Avon Valley and is now home to the recently re-branded York Mill Site. The two-acre site consists of quality retail shops, “The Mill Gallery, “The Mill Cafe & Restaurant “and is soon to be the home of the “York Mill Markets.”
