Description

The Living Desert and Sculptures Broken Hill is a must-visit destination for those who want to experience the awe-inspiring outback and see its most photographed site.

This desert oasis is home to sandstone sculptures and a flora and fauna sanctuary.

The sculptures at The Living Desert and Sculptures Broken Hill were crafted by artists during a sculpture symposium organized by Lawrence Beck. These 12 sandstone sculptures, each weighing over 50 tonnes, were created from Wilcannia's massive stone. Today, they are renowned worldwide for their artistry and are among the most photographed sites in the Australian outback.

Located on Sundown Hill, the Living Desert Reserve offers visitors breathtaking views of the outback landscape. It can be accessed by road or by hiking the 900m walking trail from the Living Desert Picnic Area. The sculptures are worth experiencing at any time of the day, as their moods change with the light. In addition to the sculptures, visitors can explore the flora and fauna sanctuary, which is bordered by an electric predator-proof fence. This sanctuary provides a unique insight into the flora, fauna, and Aboriginal culture of the region.

The best time to visit The Living Desert and Sculptures Broken Hill is any time of the year, as each season offers a unique perspective of the outback landscape. To reach The Living Desert and Sculptures Broken Hill, it is a 15-minute drive north of Broken Hill.
